In Dawsonian Gunner’s Sights: Under the Waves

a review of a game you may not know

As you’re lowered further and further into the deep, your thoughts swirl chaotically with the school of fish outside your diving bell. You’re a trained commercial diver, but not for this. Never in the open abyss of the ocean. Your thoughts circle around – your wife, your child, your old man, your future. As you take that first step into the frigid yet serene water, your mind focuses on the tasks at hand and you begin to wonder, will this chosen isolation heal or damage?

This is the first look you, as the player, receive of Stan – a commercial diver who has been contracted by a big corporation to live on the ocean floor and provide much needed maintenance. Will this extended stay under the waves of the North Sea be worth it?

The Basics

First things first, let’s look at some of the straight facts:

  • Developer: Parallel Studios
  • Release Date: August 2023
  • Platforms: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox X, Xbox S, Xbox One
  • Engine: Unreal Engine 4
  • Tags: adventure, story-rich, exploration
  • Average main story play time: 7.5 hours
  • Steam Rating: 77% positive

The Gameplay

The storyline is the driver of this game. The game progression is marked by the number of days that Stan has been working his contract. Each day is a new chapter in the storyline and each day has specific tasks to complete with a linear progression in which to complete said tasks. Stan wakes up, grabs his coffee, obtains his tasks, and heads out into the ocean. After completing the tasks, you can opt to explore the area and find the plethora of collectibles scattered around. Each new day will give you new skills and will guide you how to explore the world around you. You are given a one-man submersible to make traversal relatively easy, but you can also opt to raw dog it and swim around in your diving gear (just make sure you craft or scavenge enough oxygen sticks to do so). As the days continue, Stan battles his own reasons for taking the contract, struggles with past trauma, and wrestles with the morality of working for a big corp. that is ruining the ocean. There’s a lot going on, thematically with this game, if you couldn’t tell by that last sentence. There’s nothing inherently difficult about this game and if I had to sum it up in one sentence I’d say something along the lines of:

If you are someone who values your free will and exploration of an open world, this may not be a game at the top of your list. But if you are someone who loves narrative driven games with real heart behind it, this should definitely go at the top of your ‘to play’ list.

My Thoughts

As someone who is an absolute sucker for narrative games that gut punch the ever living emotions out of you, I thoroughly enjoyed this game. Just a simple browse through the Steam reviews will show that a majority of people enjoyed the game simply because the Unreal Engine allowed such a beautiful and immersive world. I have been open water diving before and the sound design crew really hit the nail on the head with how it sounds and ultimately feels when diving under water. So if you’ve never been diving but have always wanted to, this is a far cheaper way to simulate that experience. While the daily tasks did get a bit dull at times, each gave you a new piece of the narrative puzzle, which in turn, moved the storyline along. The voice acting isn’t the most stellar of performances, but it gets the job done. This narrative does bonk you on the head with the “big corp = bad” a bit too much at times, but I ultimately chalked that up to the devs being passionate on this topic. I ended up pouring about 15 hours into this game with a 100% completion.

While it may not have re-playability, it certainly does have heart and soul. And to me, that makes my plunge Under the Waves worth it.

A Very LXOG Night Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Discord,
Every member was gaming, so as not to get bored.
The memes were all posted in #memetown with care,
In hopes that emoji reactions soon would be there.

Some LXOGers were nestled all snug in their beds,
While promos from #gamingdeals danced in their heads.
And gamers with controllers, and I in my VR gear,
Had just settled in our chairs to play the best games of the year.

When notifications from #general caused such a clatter,
I sprang to the channel to see what was the matter.
Everyone was sharing the latest game news,
Something to read, while waiting in PvP queues.

The RGB glow from my decked out PC,
Gave the luster of mid-day on Funko Pops near me.
When what to my strained eyes did appear,
An email promoting the newest game gear!

While updating my drivers, so lively and quick,
I browsed Netflix to watch an overhyped flick.
Then I searched my library for a time wasting game,
Crippled by indecision, I just launched Warframe.

A few minutes later, I felt the game was a bore,
I closed the window and browsed the Steam store.
There was Cyberpunk, Helldivers, and Black Myth: Wukong,
And twelve editions of Skyrim, who knows which version they’re on?

I took off my headphones and set them aside,
Wondering when I last went outside.
My tummy rumbled so to the fridge I flew,
To chug a can of sugar fueled Mountain Dew.

And then from my speakers I heard a loud ping,
A Discord party had started, what a wonderful thing.
I joined the party to see what was going on,
It was one of our members, streaming Horizon: Zero Dawn.

We made jokes, laughed, and were having a great time,
While another LXOGer was posting in #saltmine.
They were sharing a tale of disappointment and woe,
I felt bad for them, but glad it wasn’t me though.

My eyes—how they twinkled, when I saw an update,
For a game, the third in the series, it was for Baldur’s Gate!
My droll little mouth was drawn up like some bows,
But before I play my game, a quick detour to #tvshows.

Someone shared a meme about Arcane, and I giggled with glee,
Maybe I’ll go to #movies, and watch a trailer or three.
Having not exercised lately, I looked at my belly,
That shook when I laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

Covering my muffin top was my favorite shirt,
On it was Potato the octopus, the adorable flirt.
Made from soft cotton and with room to grow,
Head to thelxog.com and get a shirt of your own!

It was time to wind down, my hands were starting to cramp,
My gaming chair was sticky, it had gotten quite damp.
My monitor needed a break from hours of emitting glows,
My bed was calling to me, so up from my chair I rose.

I began shutting down all my apps and my games,
Time to give my PC a rest, before it burst into flames.
With one last chance to exclaim, before I logged out of sight, I shouted:
“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

What I Wish I Knew Before Playing Starfield

I went into Starfield basically blind. I barely watched any of the pre-release content on it, so I knew very little about the game. I knew it was a space RPG, had around 1000 planets, some curated and some not, and that I would play it for basically eternity.

That said, there are a few things that I wish I knew beforehand, and I would have saved a little (or a lot of time) by knowing some of these things right as I started. So here’s my hat in the ring for this topic, spoiler free and mechanic-heavy.

Ethereum Mining: Primer

I’ve done a fair bit of research on crypto over the past year or so, trying to figure out what it’s all about. Details of all that may come in another set of blog posts, but I’m still trying to wrap my head around it all. One of my most recent projects, however, is looking into mining Ethereum.

Believe me, I completely understand that crypto has an extremely high barrier to entry because of knowledge gaps and accessibility issues. I’ve experienced this firsthand. I’m going to attempt to bridge some of those gaps here for anyone who happens to find themselves on our blog. If I tried to do too much in one post though, no one would read it.

Starting out, I’m just going to cover the very basics needed to start mining Ethereum. It may seems like a weird starting place. Sorry for that. But it’s where I am in this grand journey right now. That and it was the first topic that solidly lent itself to a blog post in talking with friends about it.

So come along for our first crypto ride! Learn with me about Ethereum mining.

TDOVH: Quick Catch-up “Session” Saturday Night

As we will be starting our first session in “The Anchored” arc in a few days, I just wanted to post a quick note to say that I will be doing a short stream at some point Saturday evening in which I’ll basically read through a small recap I’ve written up of the events that transpired in the Temples of the Cancrizans Cartographers. It’s important info to know going into our Anchored session, and I didn’t want to spend a ton of time at the beginning of that session hashing through all of it, so this was my solution. It will of course go up on our YouTube afterwards as well if you can’t catch it live. That’s all. Thanks for tuning in and happy listening!

The Shop is Open for Business

We are incredibly excited to announce the grand opening of the LXOG shop! The shop can be found in the header – just look for “Shop” and click the link.

Inside you’ll find all sorts of LXOG gear. Mugs, shirts, stickers, masks, and the like. Better yet, there are versions of the shirts that are personalized! With these, be sure to hit the “Personalize Design” button right below “Add to cart,” otherwise you will literally get a shirt that says “Your Gamertag Here”.

Poke around the shop, browse a bit, and pick up your favorite items.
